I cannot emphasize how EASY this craft is! We created a few different crafts for Father’s Day that you can check out in our Father’s Day Gifts Crafts post. However, this was the one my son had the most fun with and it turned out super cute! The possibilities are endless with what designs you could do. There are tons of gift mug tutorials on Pinterest but this is our take on a Father’s Day version that’s easy enough that my two year old could handle.

What You Need
0 White Ceramic Mug ( which you can buy inexpensive at Wal-Mart or Target )
o Painters Pens I got mine at Wal-Mart but any craft store would also carry them
0 Stickers
We tested out different types of markers for this gift to see which held up the best, Paint Markers were the best out of everything we tested.
First wash out your ceramic mug. After it’s dried apply the stickers you want to use to create your design. Let your child start drawing. After your child’s done with their drawing peel off the stickers to reveal the design. Put your mug in the oven and bake at 350 for 30 mins.
Note: As for washing I’ve only hand washed this and the design has kept up perfect. Also after baking the colors will darken a little so keep that in mind when choosing your colors for the mug!

The one we used was just one I found at Wal-Mart for $2 … it was a Better Homes & Garden brand :]
I found plain white mugs at The Dollar Store! Can’t beat that deal!

Ours has held up perfectly so far …we also only hand wash it I haven’t tried it in the dishwasher.
I read somewhere that the oil based markers may not work as well compared to the paint markers but I am going to try the oil based sharpies because they are a lot cheaper 🙂
I just used regular sharpies on my mugs and it turned out just fine. Lots of comments from our dads all positive
DId you use regular sharpies or a special version? I tried making this with one of the 50 cent Ikea mugs and it faded 🙁 Would love your insight after such a cute success!
I did something a while ago with regular sharpies and it washed right off! So with this tutorial we used Oil Based Sharpies..or even any Oil based paint markers will work. I’m not sure if it matters what type of mug you use, I know it matters for what kind of sharpie. But my mug was just a $2 one from wal-mart so it shouldnt have been much of a difference!
I bought a mug from Walmart and it said porcelain oven safe and I put my little one to start drawing on it using the painters paint and it would erase once he would start using another color. Is this supposed to happen?

I’m having a really hard time finding the Oil Based Sharpies in stores. Of course they are available on Amazon though. Has anyone tried regular ol’ paint pens yet? Just LOVE this idea! We found mugs at Dollar Store and are making extras for neighbors!

we volunteer with the veterans in our area who live in a shelter. They love their coffee. I love this idea . I was thinking that we could decorate the mugs with patriotic designs on them as well as a message. this way when they drink their coffee it will help cheer them up. again great idea.

Is it possible to use a plastic coffee cup and sharpies and then Modge Podge to keep the designs from fading?? I am participating in a Father’s Day craft show and am setting up a table for kids to make their gift and want to minimize the “breakage” as much as possible . . . 😉

When you put It in the oven do you just set it on the oven rack or put it on a cookie sheet or other type of pan?
