Our summer is never complete until the kids and I have had some sidewalk chalk sessions, it’s one of my kid’s favorite outdoor activities. But instead of just using plain ol’ sidewalk chalk we like to make some of our own recipes. One of the easiest and inexpensive recipes to whip up is Sidewalk Chalk Paint. You just need three ingredients which you probably already have on hand: cornstarch, water and food coloring. Or you can find these supplies right in the baking aisle at your local Walmart. The paint goes a long way and it keeps the kids entertained for hours!
SIDEWALK CHALK PAINT RECIPE
Materials Needed:
- Corn Starch
- Paintbrushes
- Muffin Tin
- Food Coloring
- Wet Ones® Hand Wipes
Directions:
To start, you’ll want to make sure you have all of the materials listed. We used a larger muffin tin because it’s easier to mix your paint in. Take your tin and mix equal parts of corn starch and hot water, then stir until the corn starch is completely dissolved. This will be the base for your paint.
Next you’ll want to pick the colors for your sidewalk chalk paint. Add a few drops of each color into your tin. I used neon food coloring and added about 2-3 drops per spot.
When everything’s mixed up, you can start your painting! Make sure you use the thicker paint brushes to paint with, or even the foam brushes work great. I’ve also mixed up this paint in the squeezy condiment bottles so that the kids could squirt it to make cool designs instead of using actual brushes.
What I love about this recipe is that it’s washable, but as always with any kind of art project especially chalk there’s going to be some kind of mess. Which is why I always stock up on Wet Ones® Hand Wipes when we visit our local Walmart, because besides just using them during our craft sessions they also come in handy for dining out with kids, messes in the car, and for sticky ice cream/popsicle hands during the summer.
We added a little bit of glitter to a few of our paint batches we mixed up so it added to some of the messy paint hands the kids had at the end of our painting session. The kids love to grab their own Wet Ones® Hand Wipes to clean up themselves after we’re done. And there’s moisturizing aloe inside each wipe, making them easy on skin for even the littlest of hands.
