How to Repurpose an Old Apple Mobile Device

February 23, 2021 by Jackie Cravener

In total, there are 29 iterations of the Apple iPhone, making it quite a long list to select from. Moreover, the long list forms the background to why several users continue to rush to acquire the next improved model. Over the years, end users have had to handle more than one iPhone, especially after procuring the newest model. What can you do to repurpose the old one? Find out below:

  1. Make it a car dashcam

On average, dash cams cost between $60 and $150 a piece, whereas installation charges range from $35 to $50. In total, you’ll be spending about $300 to record live visuals as you drive. However, what purpose is spending so much on such a device when your old iPhone could suffice? All you need is the right holder to fix it on your vehicle’s dashboard.

In recent times, dashcams are considered necessary security gadgets to record events while on the road. They serve as critical pieces of evidence in the event of a road accident. However, with your old, repurposed iPhone, it can serve a dual purpose by serving as an entertainment hub while recording external visuals.. It’s beneficial to sign up for a Cloud storage service to avoid having to delete older road recordings. That way, you can have an endless supply of video recordings which won’t interrupt the phone’s internal memory.

Another way to do this is by downloading iPhone-compliant apps that act as dash cams. Some examples are:

  • Nexar AI dashcam
  • Drivermatics Blackbox
  • OSM and DVR
  1. Set it up as an Apple arcade for your kids

Are you looking at getting another game console for your kids to entertain them? There’s no point in spending an amount ranging from $299 – $499 to buy an Xbox One or Nintendo Switch. Your old, repurposed iPhone can entertain and serve as an educational toy for your young ones. You can obtain these games via the iOS App Store in Apple Arcade. Keep in mind that without an Apple Arcade subscription, you can’t purchase individual games on this platform.

It costs only $5 to pay for a monthly gaming subscription if that’s your preferred package. On the other hand, if you’d rather not, it’d be better to take advantage of the free games available in Apple Arcade. Besides, even with a small screen, kids will love to play on old phones. With that said, there’s one crucial thing you should be mindful of. Arcade games take up quite a bit of phone memory, which means having enough space to keep them. To create more RAM space, you must know how to delete old photos from iPhone. Freeing up this space will prevent the usual pop-up notification from showing on the screen. Especially for minors, it’s recommended to activate parental controls as a restrictive and monitoring measure.

  1. Transform it to a remote control for your Apple TV

If you use an Apple TV, this will be a huge relief knowing that you can repurpose your old smartphone for continual use. To enable this feature on your old device, you must download and install the required app. The disadvantage of using the smartphone as a remote control is the propensity to drain battery power quickly. Unfortunately, that’ll require frequent charging or changing the battery for better mileage. However, you can also use that old, repurposed smartphone to stream Roku programs.

Indeed, Apple mobile devices are great gadgets that go beyond their traditional purposes. Besides what you have read here, there are several other uses a repurposed iPhone can offer. The next time you acquire a new and upgraded iPhone model, it’d help to consider any of these uses.
