I recently received a Fitbit as a gift and after using it for a week I was so shocked at how awful my sleeping patterns were, I was averaging between 3-4 hours a night. Now, my husband and I have two toddlers, so every drop of sleep counts for us! Sleep is essential if we are to function effectively during the day, remain calm and stay on the ball when we’re dealing with our children. And come to think of it we couldn’t think of the last time that we had a truly incredible nights sleep, not waking with any aches or pains, feeling relaxed and ready to take on the day. So we both agreed a change was needed! We made some changes to our sleep habits and most importantly our mattress and pillows, and our sleep and back pain has improved tremendously!
Here are a few tips that have helped us get a better night’s sleep.
Use essential oils right before bed
Essential oils are great for sleep and the best part is that they are all natural. I usually diffuse some lavender in my room right when I lay down to help me relax at the end of the day but I’ve also found that a bath with some Epson salt and a few drops of lavender work too. Some other oils for better sleep and relaxation are: Balance and Serenity.
Make a list
One problem of mine is that as soon as I lay down I think of a million things that I still have yet to do or have planned for the next day. So before bed make a list so you feel more organized the next day and to calm your mind before bed.
No caffeine in the afternoon
This one may be hard for me to do but it’s best to have no caffeine after 2 pm.
No electronics in bed
Have you ever just layed in bed browsing through Pinterest on your phone and lose track of the time, it can be pretty addicting! I found it best to ditch the tv and the phone, and grab a good book instead.
Train your body
You’ll do this by waking up and going to sleep at the same time every day.
Invest in a good mattress and pillow
We invested in a Yogabed™ Original Mattress and because they’re currently running a holiday sale we were able to score two free memory foam pillows +$125 off! Needless to say we fell in love at first sleep! We went from an normal mattress to a memory foam mattress and there was no adjustment period, we slept better than we had way before we even had kids! We’ve noticed just after two weeks we’ve felt so much more rested and an increase in energy.
