We love a good DIY costume, and this DIY Cereal Bowl Costume one was a hit! We found a 17 gallon plastic tub from Walmart that we spray painted white and glue cut up pool noodle around the rim for fruit loops!
I’ve seen a few DIY cereal bowl costumes on Pinterest that all used paper mache for the bowl. But I came across these 17 gallon plastic tubs at Walmart for $7 that were the perfect size for my 10 year old to use. We could only find it in black, but its nothing a little bit of white spray paint wouldn’t fix. Or you could keep the tub black or any other color totally up to you!
Step 1 – Cut off the rope handles from the tub (these holes will be where we lace the ribbon for the straps they’ll use for their shoulders). We secured a pool noodle on the inside of the tub so that we had something to glue the cut up pool noodles too. So before we spray painted it white you’ll want to attach a pool noodle to the inside of the tub. We drilled small holes and did three zip ties around it to secure it on the inside. You can see in the picture below the pool noodle sits inside.
Step 2. Then once your pool noodle is zip tied inside of your tub you can cut the bottom off the tub and spray paint it white.
Step 3. Cut your pool noodles so they look like cereal.
Step 4. Once your paint has dried lace in your ribbon to make two shoulder straps.
Step 5. Then you can start assembling your cereal on top of your bowl. We used hot glue for some but it tends to melt the foam. So we switched it up and started using Spray adhesive Gorilla glue which worked very well! it makes it tacky and sticky until it dries completely.
While the pool noodles are drying you can start your spoon. We simply cut out a large one from a piece of cardboard we had and just spray painted it silver. Then hot glued a few pool noodles on the spoon.
