Eric Carle Inspired Firefly Suncatcher Craft

June 11, 2019 by Jackie Cravener

It’s time for The Kids Craft Stars monthly craft challenge! Every month we have a challenge between a few blogger friends and I, to in-cooperate a different craft medium or technique into a simple kid craft. This month’s challenge was to come up with a craft using tissue paper. I was inspired this week by an Eric Carle exhibit at the Pittsburgh Children’s Museum that we visited with the kids. To go along with one of our favorite Eric Carle books “The Very Lonely Firefly” we made these easy Firefly Suncatchers!

Even though this craft was inspired by Eric Carle’s book “The Very Lonely Firefly“, it would also go great with Sam and the Firefly.

Supplies Needed:

  • Tissue Paper
  • Card Stock
  • Contact Paper
  • Glue
  • Scissors

Directions:

To start off take what color of tissue paper you’d like to use for the firefly, we used yellow with a little bit of green. Next either you or your child can cut the tissue paper in strips and then into smaller squares.

Then you can have them decorate the contact paper with the tissue paper pieces. When that’s finished take another piece of contact paper and lay it down on top of your contact paper to seal it. Smooth out the contact paper for any bumps and then cut out a teardrop shape for the body of the firefly.

Finally you’ll glue the head onto your tissue paper collage you cut out, then glue on the wings to finish your suncatcher. Add some tape and hang them on your window!
