It’s now September and we all know what that means… say goodbye to hot girl summer and hello to blanket hoodies and PSLs. One of the most exciting holidays of the year is just around the corner, and September is never too early to start adding some spooky features and decorations to the house.
Today we are going to run through some of the different things you can bring into your home and garden to make the house look spooky and fun for Halloween.
Dark embellished wallpaper
First of all before we look at buying and making decorations for the house, it’s time to take a look around and see if there are some changes that can be made to the walls. Paint and wallpaper are super cheap to buy online at WallpaperBoulevard.com or in your local hardware store – and you can bring some fall and Halloween magic to the space immediately in a classy way this week. Consider purchasing some deep toned plum or orange wallpaper that has dark embellishments on it and pick a feature wall to display this on for the season. It’s such a fun way to change your home and you can keep this new wallpaper feature all year long.
A starry tapestry
Halloween is all about the night, darkness, and monsters. The great thing about this season is that you can make it as scary or stylish as you want. For a boho chic look that will also bring some darkness and spirituality to the bedroom – a starry fabric tapestry can be hung on the wall. Not only will this bring a sense of calm and comfort, but it adds an air of the mystic arts that is synonymous with Halloween.
Black magic candles
Candles are a huge part of fall and winter, and during the Halloween season you can take this a step further with some stunning black magic candles in golden candlesticks to bring some mystery and witchcraft to the home. You’ll be able to decorate your kitchen table with these spooky candles as well as spread them around the house to help add atmospheric lighting in a dark way.
Neon Skulls
Looking for something a bit more exciting for your Halloween party this year? A great idea for your home would be a set of bright neon skulls. These can be found online and will light up the outside or the inside of your home providing a steampunk Halloween vibe that everyone will enjoy. You could also opt to make these at home upriself with some polystyrene or plastic skills along with a bit of neon paint to really bring them to life. You can also go a step further here and add a layer of glow in the dark paint on top!
Halloween-Themed String Lights
Who doesn’t love a good set of string lights when defrosting the house? Halloween is no different in this regard and you can easily bring both colour and a fun atmosphere to your home with a couple of sets of Halloween themed string lights. You can find string lights in a whole host of spooky designs such as pumpkins, ghosts, and even bats. Hanging these around the home will bring some spooky colour as well as fun light to your living space.
A Spider Web
Halloween is about taking advantage of people’s fears and worries, and let’s face it none of us love spiders! It is very easy to buy some fake spider webs in your local craft store and you can hang these around the house and add some plastic spiders to really make them feel uneasy and creepy. If you have a front garden with a tree, a larger scale way to decorate with this is to use pieces of rope to create a spider web shape, and then buy some giant spider decorations to put inside or make your own out of paper mache. This can be a fun craft to try out at the weekend and it will provide a spooky and impressive decorative feature of your home.
A green string light jar
What colours do you most associate with Halloween? Green and orange are likely high on your list. Green string lights can be incredibly bright and they can look like a witches potion – so before your next Halloween party you can grab a bowl or jar and fill it with green led lights that are battery operated. This can be a fun way to brighten up a dark corner of a room.
Jack ‘O Lanterns
What is Halloween without a good Jack o lantern or two? Take some time out this weekend and make your own scary Jack o lanterns with the family. You can make things interesting by having a pumpkin carving contest with your family and whoever wins gets to eat the first slice of pumpkin pie made from the leftovers. You can display your pumpkins either outside your front door or arrange them around your fireplace for a stunning Halloween display.
Spider web garland
One way to add some creepy skin crawling effect to your home this Halloween is to create a spider web Garland that will weave a creep all the way up the stairs. This can be a fun way to play around with fake webbings, with plastic spiders and flies, and other features such as some battery operated string lights. You can be as crafty or as simplistic as you can with this and it will bring a spooky element to the stairway of your home.
Black Lace Table Settings
One of the things you might want to do if you’ll be hosting a Halloween party this year is to buy some Halloween table decorations that will instil that spooky and dark atmosphere. Black lace table settings or coasters are a brilliant way to add some gothic elements to the table as well as keep things looking classy and elegant. These table settings or table runners could really liven up your design and help you to achieve that creepy Halloween look.
Crystal Balls
Want to lean into the mystic arts this Halloween? One easy decoration you can place in your living or dining room is a crystal ball on an ornate stand, with some colourful fabrics and tarot cards close by. Crystal balls can be a wonderful way to add some spirituality to the home this Halloween, plus it can be a fun activity to play around with after dinner!
Flameless Candles
One of the things you’ll need to consider when decorating your home for Halloween is safety. This is why buying LED flameless candles can be a huge help for you. Flameless candles will add a beautiful warm glow around the house and in Jack o lanterns without the risk of a fire or any children hurting themselves during the season.
A Halloween wreath
Halloween is a time to celebrate the thinning of the vail between our realm and the spirit realm, and a wreath can be a wonderful way to bring some of that fun spirit to your home as well as let people know that you are happy to take part in trick or treating. A Halloween wreath can be made from a number of things such as pumpkins, straw, candy, ghosts, vampire fangs, and plenty more. Have some fun coming up with a creepy hit colourful wreath that truly makes the most of the celebration. Some brightly coloured tinsel can be a great addition here as well as some Halloween baubles and ornaments. All you will need to create your own custom Halloween wreath is a wreath ring and hook, plenty of tinsel and straw, and lots of small items that can be both weaved within the wreath as well as a glue gun.
A Ouija Board
Halloween is about scares; and one of the scariest items you can bring into your home for this season is a ouija board. These creepy relics have been seen in countless tv shows and movies when teenagers try to contact a spirit, only to let a demon into their home. If you are brave, you can put one of these out on your coffee table during the Halloween season and allow people to try their hand at contacting the dead. To make the area surrounding it even more creepy, add a couple of candles, and write a bloody note on paper and place it next to the board for those who dare to look.
A DIY Lawn Ghost
Adding some Halloween spirit to your front lawn is a great way to have fun this season. To make a DIY lawn ghost you will need a skeleton, a post to hang it on, plenty of chicken wire or a sheer sheet, and some solar powered lights. First of all place your skeleton in pride of place in the garden, making sure it is floating above the ground. Then take your solar powered lights and weave them through the bones of the skeleton and make sure the sensor is facing the sun. Next up, take your wire or sheet and drape this over your skeleton to look like a ghostly figure. Once you are happy stick it in place and wait for it to go dark so you can see the full impact!
