Salt dough is a fun and easy craft for the kids and in the end you have an adorable keepsake ornament for your tree. There are SO many creative ideas out there for Christmas salt dough ornaments that I couldn’t pick just one, so here are some ideas that I’ve rounded up for you.

Before you get started here are some important supplies you’ll want to have on handy when you make your ornaments aside from the flour, salt and water for the dough, you’ll want to make sure you have festive holiday ribbon, paints, rolling pins, and most importantly an all purpose sealant like the one we use below!

Be advised that salt dough creations will degrade – so don’t count on them being passed down to the next generation. I made a lot of ornaments and other items in the late 70s and early 80s, and although the ones I painted and coated with a sealant have held up better, the parts that were more detailed (less solid) are crumbling. Also – and this will be obvious to some but I learned the hard way – don’t insert metal into the soft dough as I did to make a hanging loop – the salt eroded it over time. if you want it to last for generations use a different type of clay. For something you know won’t last for decades but is a cheap and fun project material, the salt dough is great!

We use polyurethane or Mod Podge on ours.

OMG so many great ideas!! I made salt dough for my first time last night with my puppy and had her paw print pushed into the salt dough and it turned out soooo dang adorable. Here’s a look at mine! I even zapped it in the microwave at the end to make the drying time quicker!

I found the dough so sticky. I had to add flour and use more to roll it out. 😔

Help! We have nothing but sticky! I’m chilling it now and the day is wasting. Unhappy 3 foster kiddos. We did what you said but I doubled it bc we wanted to make more. Also, other recipes like this for these ornaments call for 4 cups of flour, 1 cup salt. ??

Me too! Lots of flour, like another cup of it.
